God is seeking for His people (2)

1 Samuel 3:1-21

Rev. Eungyong Kim’s sermon at the KUMC of Metro Detroit

Are we seeking for God, or is God seeking for His people? Which is the right question? Most of us think that we should be seeking for God, and I was no exception. I tried my best to seek for God. From my childhood, I went to many Revival meetings, attended Bible Study classes, read many books written by famous pastors and attended numerous seminars. But it was a very difficult journey for me with lots of frustration. I almost gave up the pursuit, as seeking for God was just too hard for me.

Then, while reading the Bible intensively, I realized that the Bible had been trying to tell me the opposite. We cannot seek for God. On the contrary, it is God who seeks for His people. Then, my question was changed to “Am I the one that God is seeking for?”, instead of “Where is my God?”

How has your journey been in your life of faith? Have you been frustrated in your pursuit? Were you disappointed when you didn’t meet with God nor have any experiences with Him like others?

But the truth is, God is the one who has been seeking for His people.

There were His chosen people at every era, such as Abraham, Joseph and Moses. Now I understand why the Bible tells the stories of Cain and Abel, Abraham and Lot, Jacob and Esau, Saul and David. These were the stories of God’s people and of those who were not God’s people.

How about you? Are you the one that God is seeking for?

The chapter 3 of ‘1 Samuel’ has the full account of how God sought after Samuel. Why was God seeking Samuel?

1.  It was the era of Samuel.

We talk about our era all the time. 1 Samuel 3:1 explains the state of things at that time.

The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions.

How were things in those days?

    1)  The word of God was rare.

What does it mean that the word of God was rare? Does it mean there were no Scriptures? This was not about the written word, but about the living word that guides us and influences us to make a right decision. In those days that kind of living word had disappeared.

The living word disappeared at that time because there was nobody who was receptive to the word of God. Even now, after the Sunday sermon, some people say, “Today’s sermon was the word of God for me!”, while some others will say, “I couldn’t figure out the meaning of today’s sermon.” Why do people have such different reaction after the same sermon?

The same thing happens in regard to the Q.T. Sessions. Some people are really happy with them, while the others don’t like ‘to set apart a certain time and place’ for Q.T. Sessions. By setting apart a certain time and place, we are setting apart our hearts, and this should be the beginning of the true Q.T. Sessions.

In those days there were not many who were eager to hear the word of God and to set apart their time and place, and then to go out before the word of God.

    2)  The visions of God were not many.

What does it mean that there were not many visions? These visions come from above, but there were not many who were eager to dream about the visions. Therefore, God couldn’t provide the visions to people, who should be eager to accomplish them.

Rev. Hak-Joong Kim is a classmate of mine at the Seminary. Now he is the Senior Pastor of Ahn-San church which has the attendance of 10,000 people every Sunday, and he already served as the Bishop of the Methodist Church in Korea. I want to share his story when he just planted a new pioneering church. For the first 6 months, there was no one coming to his church, so his wife was the only audience for his sermons. Then on one Sunday, his wife was so disappointed that she went back to the parsonage. Rev. Kim was also so discouraged that he couldn’t go on with his sermon. He began to cry and pray, then fell asleep. He heard someone saying “Wake up” and saw that his church was filled with white-robed angels. What an amazing vision! Rev. Kim got his strength back and looked forward to the next Sunday. Again, there was no one sitting in the church, but he didn’t lose heart. When he saw someone peeking in, he shouted to the person, “Come in and meet the Lord!” That person was shocked at the command and came into the church and became the first member of his church. From that time on, more and more people came to his church and helped the church grow by leaps and bounds.

Visions are given by God. God communicates through dreams, like the dreams of Jacob, Joseph, Moses and David. We need visions which will lead us with the pictures of God. In our life of faith, we should encounter the visions of God, for us and for our families and for our church.

We are swayed by the times we are in. Is the word of God rare in your life? Does your faithful life have depth as well as longevity? Have you received any visions from God? Isn’t your era similar to the era of Samuel?

2.  It was Samuel’s pious devotion.

Verses 2 and 3 in today’s passage show the contrast between the habits of Eli and Samuel.

‘One night, Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was.’

Eli was barely able to see and lying down in his usual place. What do these two things tell us about his status? Not only he was old, his spiritual eyes were dim and he was lying down in his comfortable bed.

But Samuel was completely different. He was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Why was he lying down there? He was there to keep the candles going, as the temple of God having the ark of God should not be darkened. Therefore, this young boy Samuel was sleeping nearby, but keeping awake to take care of the candles.

The two were so different in their devotion. One was spiritually dead and sleeping comfortably at home, and the other was devoted to taking care of the candles and gladly sleeping in the temple of God.

In the Exodus, God called Moses, but why did God call him specifically? Was it because Moses was educated well in the Egyptian palace for 40 years? Was it because he had excellent personality? It was because of Moses’ heart. Even though he was living in luxury at the palace, he was not comfortable and went out to see his own people. Then, one day he ended up killing an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew. Moses’ heart was with his suffering people, and God must have valued his heart and called him.

God sees the heart of everyone.

It was the same with David. When the Israelites were battling the Philistines, all the Israel soldiers lost hearts after seeing the size and weapons of Goliath. But David was different. David was not paying attention to Goliath, but thought about God being insulted. “How could he defy the armies of the living God?” We think God called David for His work because of David’s heart.

God had been watching the little things Samuel did and very pleased with them, then He called Samuel.

Isn’t this a common denominator among those people who are called by God?

< A pastor had a marriageable daughter and a prospective groom for her was a candidate for the ministry and very poor. He sighed and said, “I have struggled all my life, throughout my ministry, and I don’t want my daughter to go through the same hardships.” After hearing this, his wife said, “As the wife of a pastor, I had to struggle financially, but I have been blessed to be near God all my life with worship services, prayers and the word of God. I am happy our daughter is going to have the same life.” >

< Leading a Revival in Korea, Bishop Yang-Hee Chung said, “Dear congregation, short people like me are the blessed ones in the Bible. Those tall guys in the Bible, such as Goliath and Saul, they were the sinners. So, don’t be envious of the tall people in the world.

After the Revival was over, one member of the church came to him and said, “I have heard that you have a marriageable daughter, and I have a wonderful son with good education and good job, so I want you to consider him as a potential groom for her. But there is one thing … he is shorter than you.” Then, Bishop turned red with embarrassment, and everyone had a good laugh. >

Are you the one God is seeking? Are your heart and your actions worthy of being called by God?

3.  The calling of God

In today’s passage, God called the boy Samuel four times. God had been seeking Samuel and calling for him, “Samuel! Samuel!” What was the reason for the calling of God?

    1)  There is no one worthy!

We are faced with the question of ‘Is there no right position, or is there no right person for the position?’ Who is right? Compare those who say that there are not right positions and those who say that they are not the right fit for the positions.

When I was ministering in the countryside, Rev. Ja-Kyung Koo told me a story about a special pine tree (Kum-Kang Pine). These trees grow so straight up that they are the best lumber for big buildings. No matter how remote these pine trees grow, the carpenters building a palace will seek them out and use them for the palace. This story has remained in my heart.

“Am I the problem? Or is God the problem? Or is the current era the problem? Is the position the problem, or am I the problem for the position?”

Are we those people God is seeking for?

    2)  Does God call those who are prepared? Does God call those whom He will prepare?

At a Revival in my childhood, I heard the preacher saying that ‘God uses those who are prepared’, and I was not happy, as I knew I was not prepared. For a long time, I mulled over that statement. Then, after I became a pastor, I have found out that nowhere in the Bible it is stated that God uses only those who are prepared.

Take the case of Abraham. How deficient he was at times! How about Moses, or David, or even Samuel of today’s passage? They were all deficient and imperfect human beings.

When God called Samuel, he didn’t even know it was the calling of God. So, he ran to Eli, because he believed Eli was calling him, having never experienced the calling of God. Only when Eli told him that it was God, not himself, who was calling him, Samuel believed it.

Therefore, it is right to say that God calls those whom He will prepare, but of course, God does not call anyone who is not yet prepared. Now I understand what the Revival preacher in my childhood meant about being prepared.

God calls those who are prepared in their hearts, in their spirits and in their prayers. We learn that these were the qualities that Samuel had been prepared for.

Let us go back to the beginning.

Are you seeking for God? Are you willing to become the one God is seeking for?

Which one should we be doing?
