47thAnniversary of the church

Serve the Lord with passionate zeal!

Romans 12:3-13

Rev. Hoon Kyoung Lee’s sermon at the KUMC of Metro Detroit

On this 47thanniversary of the founding of our church, may God bestow special blessings upon all of you gathered here! I am so happy to come here and see you again.

Do you remember the catch phrase of Nike company commercial, “Just do it!”? What it means is that we have to take action now. As Christians, we have to take action for the church, which is the body of Christ. We should commit ourselves to serving the church and the Lord.

(Example) One day there was a serious discussion between a chicken and a pig about their commitment. The chicken said, “I have committed myself to laying one egg a day.” Then, the pig argued, “That is not much of a commitment. But my commitment to become a bacon is a real sacrifice.” What is your commitment to the Lord?

Our self-sacrifice and dedication bring changes to the world. By willing to sacrifice his son Isaac, Abraham became the father of the faithful and prepared the path for the Lamb of God who would die for the redemption of the humankind. How did Abraham commit to God? He obeyed the command of God to sacrifice his son, who had been born to him when he was 100 years old. How painful the decision must have been for him! His commitment was more than any other human beings could have dedicated.God was pleased with Abraham’s commitment and raised him up as the father of the faithful.

Our commitment requires us to have positive faith and positive attitude. When David saw Goliath on the battlefield, he did not have any fear of his enemy, but had a very positive faith in his sling shot. His faith led him to have positive attitude, so without any hesitation, he was able to use his sling shot to kill Goliath. David’s positive attitude won over the circumstances. When you serve the church, you can accomplish great new things by having positive faith and positive attitude. Our commitment should be firmly based on Jesus’ command of The greatest among you will be your servant. (Matthew 23:11)

God has commissioned Rev. Eungyong Kim to serve as the Senior Pastor of this church. I pray that the pastors and all the members of this church will continue to serve the church with positive attitude and passion, after this 47th anniversary.Whenever I visit other churches, I am reminded how special this church is. You should be really proud and thankful for being a member of the Korean United Methodist Church of Metro Detroit.

(Example) When I was meditating upon the passage about Prophet Elijah asking for God’s mercy under a Rodem Tree (broom tree), I realized that my church was my Rodem Tree. During my ministry, by paying visits to members who were exhausted and lonesome, I was able to serve as a Rodem Tree for them to lie down under. Now in my retirement, I have realized that my Rodem Tree is my church, which is the body of Christ. Whatever your commitment to your church is, never forget that the church is your true Rodem Tree.

In today’s passage, Apostle Paul tells us in detail about how we should serve the church. In Romans 12:1-2, in view of God’s mercy, Paul urges us to “offer your bodies as living sacrifices”, “do not conform to the pattern of the world”, “be transformed by the renewing your mind”, “be able to test and approve what God’s will is”, and then he adds that “this is your spiritual act of worship”.

After urging us to dedicate ourselves to be the spiritual worshipers to God, in today’s passage of Romans 12:3 Apostle Paul advises us, Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought” in your service to the church, “but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.” We all know that there will be troubles in the church, when we think of ourselves more highly than we should.

(Example) Rev. Ray Stedman, who had served the Peninsula Bible Church in California as the Senior Pastor, used to meditate upon three things every morning.

The first was that he was created in the image of God. Believing that we have been created in the image of God gives us the conviction that our daily lives are our answers to God’s Creation.

The second was that he was filled with the Spirit of God. Even though we are not worthy of God’s love, we are blessed with the Spirit of God who will work specifically in our lives.

The third was that he was a part of God’s planned work. Therefore, everything we do today is for the glory of God.

Now, how should we serve the church?

First, we should serve the church diligently and zealously. Romans 12:11 says, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” We should not be slow or lazy due to our worries or self-consciousness. Proverbs 6:6 says, “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise” and Proverbs 6:9 asks, “How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?”

There are some people who are diligent in their worldly affairs day and night, but lacking in zeal and spiritual fervor in serving the Lord. Apostle Paul urges these people to have passionate zeal. When we have passionate zeal for the work, we can easily become very diligent. Therefore, we should have passional zeal for our work for the church. And we should be diligent in our life of faith. Only when we are diligent, we can find the time for praying intercessory prayers, for participating in church activities and for studying the Word of God.

We should keep the spiritual fervor when we serve the Lord. In serving the church and in all aspects of our life of faith, having the spiritual fervor will help us accomplish more for the Lord. Jesus doesn’t want us to have a lukewarm faith.

In the Revelation 3:16, Jesus admonished the church in Laodicea, “Because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” I hope and pray that all of you serve the Lord with passionate zeal.

When we serve the Lord and the church, we should serve as servants. The word of ‘serve’ is derived from the Greek word ‘Doulos’ meaning a servant. Therefore, we should serve like servants. I urge all of you to remember always that we should never be lacking in zeal, but keep our spiritual fervor in serving the Lord. You should never boast of your own accomplishments in the church.

The next thing is that we should use our God-given talents to serve as the good stewards for the church. Romans 12:6 says that “We have different gifts” and then Paul explained all the different gifts that have been given to us. Romans 12:13 says, “Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” There are many diverse and priceless gifts that have been given to us by God and all of these should be used for the benefit of the church, in accordance with the advice in 1 Corinthians 4:7.

It is very important for us to serve each other with the gifts we have received. To serve others, we have to be willing to make sacrifices at times. God is faithful today and forever, as stated in Hebrews 13:8; “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” As we serve the church of God, we have to follow the will of God always. We should serve the church truthfully, constantly and devotedly, without any tricks or selfish wiles.

The good stewards volunteer for the work. Apostle Peter says in 1 Peter 5:2, “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be.” We can see that just like us, it was not easy for the early Christians to volunteer for the church work. Because the church work is voluntary, it can be more successful or more impossible to do it.When you volunteer for it with zeal, God will be glorified more and our church will shine more.

My beloved congregation, on this occasion of the 47th anniversary of the founding of our church, I hope and pray that all of you will serve the Lord with more passionate zeal. I hope you will serve as a good steward, according to the talents you have been given, as we should be the good stewards of God. From those who have been put in charge, their faithfulness is expected by God. I pray in the name of the Lord that as good stewards, all of us will be praised by the Lord with “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
