The men and women who do the Q.T. everyday

1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Rev. Eungyong Kim’s sermon at the KUMC of Metro Detroit

Are you doing the Q.T. regularly?  How many days of each week are you doing it?

Some people say that they are just too busy to find time for doing the Q.T., and I have to agree with them. Really Q.T. does not go with today’s hectic life style, unless we get over the temptation of keeping busy at all times. Also, doing the Q.T. every day is really different from our usual life style of reading and meditating upon the Word. Doing the Q.T. changes the pattern of our life style.

< The woman who calls it even;

When I was ministering in Seoul, I used to go to a marketplace to evangelize. One day, the owner of a fresh fruits store told me this; “Pastor, I think being a Christian means that you commit sins all week long and then go to church to barter away your sins and then commit sins again the following week. In my opinion, the Christians are not that different from nonbelievers like me. That is why I am never going to attend church. So, do not even try to preach Gospel to me! >

Her words stayed with me for a long time. Whenever I prayed, they came back to me. If the people of the world think that we are not very different from them in our everyday life, are we really different from them, even if we pray and worship so devotedly on Sundays? Are we those Christians whose lives are so different on week days? Then, who are we?

In my ministry, I come across many believers who attend church regularly, but their characters never change. If their characters don’t change, how could they change their lives? Is it still a true faith, if your life never changes? How could we have the faith that changes our lives?

1.  You should eat the Word.

Doing the Q.T. is going to change your lives. How does it accomplish the change? When we are transformed from the hearer of the Word to the eater of the Word, the pattern of our life style is bound to change.

How is the hearing of the Word different from the eating of the Word?

From my early childhood, I grew up hearing the Word. I went to many church gatherings and prayer retreats with my mother and heard many sermons from famous pastors. Then, while in Seminary and later in ministry, I read many books written by well-known pastors; Rev. Dong-Won Lee, Rev. Young-Sun Park, Rev. Young-Jo Ha, Rev. Han-Heum Ok, etc. I was really impressed by those books and learned so much from them that in my early days of ministry, I used to imitate their delivery of sermons and write my sermons imitating their sermons.

How about you? Is your life of faith similar to mine? Have you listened to the sermons of famous pastors and read their books for your faithful life?

But the problem with that kind of faithful life is that only your heads are changed, but not your hearts, which will really change us and change our lives. So, our characters remain the same, even after listening to all those sermons, as they don’t become our own words nor affect our hearts enough. Therefore, our life of faith may look impressive to others, but our life style does not change. Even when they are able to change our lives, it will take a long time. Also, there are some who go back to their old life style again after some time.

Only when the Word that we read and digest becomes our Word, it can change us. Other people’s Word and their meditations upon the Word cannot change us.

< While I was serving as an Associate Pastor in Kang-Nam, Korea, each time after the delivery of my sermon, some people would ask me questions regarding my sermon and point out what I got wrong. There was even one person who pointed out that my rendition of the Apostles’ Creed was wrong. When I asked them, what was wrong with my sermon, they would answer that my sermons were unlike the sermons they had heard from the famous pastors. >

The Word we eat will change us and change our lives, but the Word we hear will take a lot longer time to change us. The bigger problem is that in the meantime, we have the tendency to try to change others and criticize others with the Word we have heard.

We should be the ones who eat the Word! Every day we should stand before God and make it a pattern in our life. When we stand before the Word of God and search for the meaning of the Word, God will feed us with the Word.

2.  Only after the Word was eaten, its application in our lives will begin.

Today’s passage is the passage from last Monday’s Q.T. Apostle Paul says, “Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone.” To the Jews he became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law he became like one under the law (even though he himself was not under the law), so as to win those under the law. He gave up his freedom and became a slave in order to save as many souls as possible.

The life that Paul has shown is the evangelical life that follows the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Through His ministry on earth, Jesus showed us the Gospel of His incarnation and the Gospel of His crucifixion. Forsaking the throne in heaven, Jesus came down to earth and lowered Himself for our salvation. Jesus came not for the righteous, but for the disgraced sinners like us. He embraced them with love and died for them. He had more love for the weaker and sinful people, and that is the Gospel of the Cross. Why did He lower Himself and bear the Cross Himself? It was because He wanted to save us from sins and make us the people of God, and this is the Gospel for us.

Apostle Paul demonstrated to us his evangelical life that followed the Gospel of Jesus. Even though he was free, he chose to live as a slave in order to win the Jews and those under the law and those not having the law.

While meditating upon this passage, I began to apply it to my own life. Is my life an evangelical life? I began to reflect upon my life to see if I am following the Gospel of Jesus or living the evangelical life of Paul. How about you? Are you living the evangelical life? Are you following Jesus in your life?

As soon as I began to apply this passage to my life, God showed me my true self; my two selves of ‘living under the law’ and ‘living evangelical life’. Having the faith under the law means one believes he is becoming holy by observing God’s law. By keeping the sabbath, tithing and serving the church, he considers himself to be a complete Christian. But the person having this kind of faith has the tendency to regard himself to be righteous, while looking down on others. This is the reason why the Jews call the Gentiles as ‘Dogs’. God had chosen the Jews to be the vessels to save the Gentiles, but they forgot the heart of God and believed they were holy and began to judge and criticize others. Those with the faith under the law use their small faith to judge others who had been saved by Jesus through the Cross.

On the other hand, having the evangelical faith means giving up one’s own freedom in order to save others, like Paul did. Therefore, those with the evangelical faith will only love and serve others, instead of judging them, and they will encourage and raise up the weak. The evangelical faith means measuring one’s own self with the absolute standard of the Gospel, while serving others with evangelical love.

< Recently, during a casual conversation, my wife made a confession. “Honey, now I want to tell you something. For a long time, whenever you called me in a loud voice, my heart used to sink low, because I was worried you were upset with me and criticizing my behavior. Even though I know that you aren’t upset when you call me in a loud voice, I am still surprised and unhappy when that happens.” After hearing this confession, I felt so ashamed of myself and really sorry to my wife. I was the kind of person who acts like a decent pastor outside of home, but at home I was saying unpleasant things to my wife and criticizing her often. Thanks to her reminiscences, I was able to see myself as a weakling and a sham.

Believing that “I am righteous and my wife is still lacking”, I shouted to my wife and criticized her, due to my arrogance and false sense of righteousness. I am thankful to her for making me realize my weakness and insufficiency, and I thank God for providing me such precious and helpful wife who prays for me and serves me always. So, I have promised to her that from now on, I will always call her gently and sweetly. >

When we stand before the Word, it will show us our true self and help us in applying the Word to our life. With the application of the Word through the Q.T., we can go forward for a new life and bear the fruit of the Q.T. ministry.

3.  Shall we begin our new life with the Word?

In my ministry, I have seen too many church members living their lives without the help of the Word. There are too many Christians who do not know much about the Word. When I go for home visits, I can see that their Bibles have not been opened for a long time. As they don’t have much knowledge about the Bible, their faith does not grow and their inner beings do not change.

Without the Word, they only hear the loud voices of the people in the world. When one doesn’t hear the voices of God, but hear only the voices of the other people and of the world, one is continuously filled with the inner and outer conflicts. Having faith means paying attention to the voice of God and reflecting upon ourselves, but when we don’t hear the voice of God, other things take the place of God and rule our lives.

I have been checking to see how the Cell Group meetings are run and have found out that usually 30 minutes are spent for the worship and 2 hours are spent for talking about the world. Without the Word, there is no application, and when there is no application of the Word, there is nothing to share with the others in the Group.

Having faith means having the Word in our lives by hearing the voice of God. Only when we meditate upon the Word, we begin to hear the voice of God. When Joshua became the leader of the Israelites after the death of Moses, he was very afraid. So, he went before God. Then, God gave him the words of Joshua 1:8; “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” God didn’t give Joshua any advices on how to lead the people, to prepare for the wars, or to gather the food supplies, etc. God just invited Joshua to the same ‘life with the Word’ that Moses had walked on.

The life with the Word is the most powerful life.

Have you ever heard about Pastor Chuck Smith?

When Pastor Chuck Smith arrived at his new post, Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California, there were only 25 members in the church. In spite of all his best efforts, the number of members didn’t grow. He prayed to God more. One day, he heard the voice of God saying “Go to the beach”. So, he went to the beach and there he saw that countless young hippies were having parties all night long with drugs and liquor. Pastor Smith met them and preached Gospel to them and led them to the church after composing new Gospel songs for their acoustic guitars. Soon, Pastor Smith’s church was filled with hippies, but a problem arose. The original members were against marijuana-smelling hippies for bringing sand from the beach with their sandals and brought up this matter for discussion at their General Assembly. Fortunately, they agreed to get rid of the carpeting in the church and accepted the young hippies into the church. After Pastor Smith followed the voice of God and went to the beach, he has led many young hippies with the Gospel and his church has the congregation of over 35,000 members now.

Not only that, Pastor Chuck Smith recognized the talent of a young man, Greg Laurie, who had wasted his former life in liquor, drugs and violence, and entrusted him to lead a Bible Study class. When this class became explosively popular, he got hold of an empty church and asked Greg to start a new church. This was the beginning of the Harvest Fellowship Church, which would grow to become many times the size of its mother church, Calvary Chapel. Sometime later, he asked Greg to lead as the main speaker of the Harvest Crusade with more than 40,000 people attending and Pastor Smith himself served only as the Master of Ceremony of the Crusade. Pastor Smith raised up many young evangelists as well as Greg Laurie. He also raised up many young pastors such as Mike MacIntosh who would lead a tremendous revival of the church later.

God’s Word sent a pastor to the beach, so that countless young people could be saved and many young spiritual leaders would be raised up.

How is your life? Is your life being led by the Word? Are you willing to come out from the life without the voice of God to the life with the Word and with the voice of God?
