The church where the voice of God can be heard

2 Kings 5:1-7

Rev. Eung Yong Kim’s sermon at the KUMC of Metro Detroit

With the sermon on ‘A church that is like the city of refuge’ (#1), I shared with you the grace and recovery of our church’s identity, and with last week’s sermon on ‘A church where the spiritual growth is taking place’ (#2), I shared the subjects of ‘the measure we should use’ and ‘reflecting upon ourselves’ and ‘storing up the good’.

Today, we are going to share the topic of ‘The church where the voice of God can be heard’ and meditate upon our church and our personal faith.

All of us are familiar with Commander Naaman’s miraculous healing.

Is this just a story of an amazing miracle? Certainly not.

There is a deeper message from God hidden in the story.

Naaman was introduced as a commander of the army of the king of Aram. He had the position, power and wealth in his possession. How hard and how long he must have strived to achieve all of those?

Then, the Bible tells us another aspect of his life.

‘But he had leprosy.’ This is very crucial.

This explains Naaman’s inner self which was so different from the outer aspects of his life.

What does it mean that he had leprosy?

This means that he had been suffering for a long time with a disease that tormented, toppled and frustrated him.

People were envious of his outer aspects, but the inner aspect of his life was rotting away with leprosy, unknown to the people outside.

This passage makes me reflect upon myself, upon all the members and upon our church.

Don’t I have leprosy? Don’t we have leprosy? Doesn’t our church have leprosy?

How healthy is my inner self?

Don’t I have any lingering disease that has tormented me for a long time?

With this story of Naaman’s leprosy, God wants us to reflect upon our own leprosy.

By paying attention to how Naaman was cured of leprosy, we will have a clear understanding of the Word of God.

1.  Through the voice of his maid servant, God spoke to him.

It was a minor incident in his life. From a war waged against Israel, Naaman acquired a young girl from Israel to serve his wife. Afterwards, he may have forgotten all about her, as it didn’t seem very important.

After he had leprosy, he was desperate to get help from anyone, no matter who the person might be.

One day, the maid servant from Israel said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet in my hometown, he would be cured of leprosy.”

She may not have put too much importance in what she was saying, but this was an amazing news to Naaman.

His reaction to this new information was immediate.

He went before his king, without even trying to find more detailed information.

He told the king what the girl from Israel had said and requested that the king should write a letter to the king of Israel, which he would take with him to Israel.

A small voice from a young girl brought on enormous changes and decisions.

What moved the heart of Naaman so radically?

It was not his usual way of living, and it was just a small voice from the maid servant.

But he was paying attention to that message, as if it came from God Himself.

< I want to share the story of Deaconess Jireh Kim >

In my former church, there was a Korean-Japanese woman who had returned to live in Korea. When I went to visit her as our new member, she told me about her life story and that she would have to make a trip to Japan to sell her real estate. She asked me to keep an eye on her two children, while she was in Japan for a week. Then, she left for Japan but did not return for a long time. Finally, after two months, she returned home and I asked her what had happened. This is what happened to her during that time.

After arriving in Japan, she found out that the prospective buyer was a swindler who had sold her house fraudulently and disappeared, taking the money from the false transaction. She was so shocked at this information that she didn’t know what to do next. She didn’t have any place to stay, and she had bought only a one-way plane ticket, planning to buy her return ticket with the money from the real estate transaction. She was so heartbroken that she began to cry at the bus stop. “Dear God, please help me! My children and I need the money for our living expenses. How are we going to live without the money?” She kept on crying for two hours. Then, she noticed that there had been a bag on the same bench where she was sitting, ever since she started crying. When she opened the bag, there was a huge amount of cash, 6,400,000 Yen. She began to sing, because God answered her prayers. The amount was not as much as she would have gotten from the real estate, but knowing that God was helping her made her very happy. She was ready to go home with the money, then she heard the voice; “You wicked woman! After crying so much for getting swindled out of your money, how could you now take someone else’s money!”

Pricked by her conscience, she went to a police station with the money. After hearing the details, the policeman asked this question; “I want to know why you didn’t take this money and run, after having lost all of your money.” This was her reply to him; “I am a Christian and God asked me, ‘How could you take someone else’s money and run, after experiencing so much pain for the loss of your own money?’”

After thinking for a while, the policeman said that he would do his best to retrieve her money and offered a room at his own home for her to stay. He also offered his lawyer brother’s help in this matter. While she stayed there for two months, the policeman arrested the swindler and retrieved her money from him. Then, she was able to come home. >

‘A voice of a maid servant’

Have you ever paid attention to such an insignificant voice?

Have you ever reacted to that voice like Naaman did?

Some people at church tell me that they have never heard the voice of God.

Our life of faith is the life of hearing the voice of God.

We can hear the voice of God when we are listening to a sermon, reading the Bible, praying to Him, or from the life story of a fellow member of the church.

Our God likes to speak to us.

When we begin to hear the voice of God, our values are bound to change.

I want you to come out to hear the voice of God.

Once we hear the voice of God, our life is bound to change.

I really want our church is the church where the voice of God can be heard.

The reason for our worship, our prayers and reading the Bible is to hear the voice of God.

2.  The voice of your own ego is blocking the voice of God.

In today’s passage, we are very surprised at the next incident that happened to Naaman, who had made such a bold decision to go immediately to see the prophet in Israel after hearing the information from his maid servant.

When he arrived at Elisha the prophet’s house carrying the king of Aram’s personal letter, two things happened to Naaman.

1)  Elisha didn’t even allow Naaman to come into the house to see him.

Naaman must have felt insulted and thought to himself, “Does he know who I am?”

This is just like us who cannot lay down our own egos even before God.

When I suggest to people to pray as loud as they can, there are always some who protest with “Do I really have to shout to be heard by God?”

That means their egos are still so intact that they are not going to be easily broken or changed.

Naaman could have been like them; his ego could have been still too intact to be broken.

Only when you let go of your own ego, you will be filled with the Holy Spirit.

2)  He was told to wash in the river Jordan!

Naaman was angry at this message and said, “Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?”

He wanted to have his way, which is not the way of God. He acted just like us in demanding his own way.

After experiencing these two things, Naaman went off in a rage to go back to his home.

He would rather die of leprosy than suffer such indignities.

Doesn’t his action remind us of our own actions?

Even after hearing the voice of God and after having been moved by the voice, we quickly resort to our old ways when we encounter something that we don’t agree with or aren’t comfortable with in the new way.

< I am happy to notice that lately many of you are in high spirits because of having your new Senior Pastor.

But, as I said before, it takes time to cultivate the land to make it fertile. Also, it takes patience and endurance to make a barren land fertile.

It cannot be accomplished within one or two months, nor within one year. I cannot work the land alone without your participation, and it will be accomplished when you begin to cultivate your own land willingly. >

Most importantly, our own egos and our own ways will have to be changed. Why?

That is the way to make a land fertile. The land will remain barren as long as we want to have our own ways according to our own egos.

Many of us want to hear the voice of God and witness the miracles of God, but without our obedience, we will not be able to do that. Only by obeying and following the will of God even if we don’t agree or approve the way, we will be given the opportunity.

God bestowed His grace upon stupid Naaman, using someone else’s voice.

Naaman’s servant went to him when he was ready to take off and said, “If the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” (Why do you insist on your own way only? How arrogant can you be!)

It was only the voice of a servant. But it was God’s way of making him realize his mistake through his servant’s voice.

After hearing this, Naaman’s ego and pride seem to have shattered.

He began to reflect upon his disease seriously; I was sick with my ambitions. I was sick with my arrogance.

Naaman was sick physically and spiritually, and God wanted to cure him.

God does not try to change our outer appearance, but He wants to change our inner self.

< Joseph’s standard

Why didn’t he succumb to the temptation of Potiphar’s wife?

Because he had a different standard for himself.

1)  Different standard for hardships.

His standard for hardship was not having no material comforts, but having no relationship with God.

2)  Different standard for prosperity.

His standard for prosperity was not having much material wealth, but having the Providence of God.

That was why he was able to resist the temptation.

When we hear the voice of God, our standards begin to change, because that is what God wants us to do.

When our standards begin to change, our church will be changed and amazing things will happen in our church.

3.  The true voice of God for us

We have to pay attention to the voice of God and to the details.

Elisha had told Naaman “to wash yourself seven times in the Jordan”.

Why seven times?

Naaman became obedient in the end; He went down to the river and began to wash himself.

Once, twice, and one more time … he was washing in the common water of the Jordan River. Now, what was happening to him?

He was being healed.

First, his body was healed of leprosy.

Then, the more important healing took place, and it was the healing of his faith.

Naaman was restored of his faith in God and became convinced of the Living God.

When we have the true faith in God, we want to have a close relationship with God and decide to live the way He wants us to live. Then, we confess, “I will never live my life away from you, God. I will live according to your will.”

A greater change than his physical healing had taken place inside of Naaman.

It is for this same reason God speaks to us.

God wants us to live and have a good relationship with Him.

Believing this is our faith.

Let us go back to today’s passage.

After he was healed, Naaman went back to Elisha the prophet and told him the following.

“May the LORD forgive your servant for this one thing:

When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning on my arm and I bow there also - when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the LORD forgive your servant for this.”

For this reason, God asked Naaman to wash himself seven times.

While washing himself seven times, a true change has taken place inside of Naaman.

Not only his physical ailment of leprosy, his inner deep ailment was also healed.

When you hear the voice of God, the faith begins to take hold inside of you.

That is the reason why God speaks to us with His voice.

I hope and pray that ours is the church where the voice of God can be heard.
