‘The Actively Working Faith’

Luke 24:13-27

Rev. Sun Hyung Jo’s sermon at the KUMC of Metro Detroit

Among the congregation in a fellow pastor’s church, there is a Middle School boy named Min-Shuk who has been known all over the church as a polite and exemplary young man with a kind heart. One day the pastor was so curious about the way his parents were bringing up such an exemplary boy that he asked him this question; “Min-Shuk, how did you grow up to be such a good-natured and courteous young man?” He answered, “Pastor, thank you! At home my mother always tells me a lot of nice words to straighten me out.” “Is that so? What kind of nice words does she say so often?” This was his answer; “My mother always says these nice words. Min-Shuk, when I say nicely to you, you say greeting to others politely! When I say nicely, you come quick and eat dinner! When I say nicely, you go to church and attend the worship service!” Let us say to those sitting next to you; “When I say nicely, listen to the sermon carefully! When I say nicely, be prepared to receive the grace!”

Dear congregation, “are you enjoying your life of faith?” You don’t have to raise your hand, but answer in your heart if your life of faith is full of fun. Now, the next question; “are you wondering about your life of faith, because it is no fun, doesn’t give any meaning or money to you, doesn’t heal your sickness, doesn’t help your business?” I got the answer from your eyes. This church is filled with people who are enjoying their life of faith, except a few persons.

All the churchgoers say they live a faithful life in which they live on faith and by faith, but it is very important how actively their faith is working in their lives. When their faith is working actively, their life of faith is very interesting, but when it is not working actively, their life of faith becomes very boring and they just go through the motions in their worship, in serving the church, in their offerings and in their mission activities.

During the Sunday services, you have to be careful not to remain just a listener to the sermons without actively doing something. It is very dangerous for you to only listen to the sermons, as you begin to have the mistaken assumption that you know everything about the faith and all your knowledge about the Bible is your faith. The two disciples going to a village called Emmaus were such people; they knew a lot about Lord Jesus, but their knowledge was not their faith.

In today’s passage, on their way to Emmaus, these two disciples were talking with each other, and as they were discussing things, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them, but they did not recognize Him. Then Jesus asked them what they were discussing while walking. One of them, Cleopas, explained all the things that happened in Jerusalem recently and told him that Jesus had been crucified, but there had been some rumors of His resurrection.

These two men were aware of all the up-to-date news about Lord Jesus, but did not have enough faith in His resurrection, so they couldn’t recognize Him who was right next to them. It is the same with many Christians of today. They have sufficient knowledge about the Gospel of the Cross, they know about the Easter lilies and the choir’s cantata, and about sharing of the Easter food. They have heard enough about faith and studied enough about faith, but the big problem they have is that their faith is not working in their lives.

A reporter asked a question to an astronaut who had just returned to earth, “What is the best thing about coming back to earth?” The astronaut replied, “While in space, I missed the pull of gravity. Now that I am back on earth, I like this gravity which takes firm hold of me.” Gravity is the force of gravitation which is the natural attraction between two massive bodies. We cannot see it, but the earth has this power of pulling us down, so that we do not fly away into the space but have our feet planted firmly on the round earth and live comfortably.

What or who is the gravity in your life? Some people say that after a long day at work, when they sit down on their bed and count crisp dollar bills after taking a shower, they get refreshed, renewed and recover their peace of mind, so money is their gravity. Some say their children are their gravity. No matter how hard their work is, they can endure and withstand it while thinking about them, as their children are their gravity. But, the pull of money, people, popularity, pleasure or power is not constant and will be changed in the end, and all can be blown away into space in a moment.

God is the only gravity that is strong enough to hold us firm forever and I want you to believe this when you are faced with daunting problems and hardships. Sometimes we are overtaken by a violent storm which uproots our lives completely and throws us into bottomless despair and disappointments, but in the midst of the strongest storms that threaten to blow us out of space, the love of God is the gravity to hold us firm in love. I want to share Romans 8:38-39. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Our Lord has given us the strength and the power to spring back to our place after wavering and wandering around and when He leads us back, that is the time our faith is working actively in our lives. Let us say this to those sitting next to you and in front and back of you; “The Lord is your gravity. Thanks to him, you don’t need to worry about vanishing into space.”

Please repeat after me; “When we embrace life, our faith will begin to work.” Walking with Lord Jesus means embracing His life. Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Amen.

In my church, there are several families who are expecting babies. Until the pregnant woman’s belly begins to show or until the ultrasound test shows, no one can be sure of the pregnancy. But with the faith that a new baby is growing inside, everything about the expectant mother changes. She becomes careful about what she eats, what she sees and hears, and what she does. Even when she has a cold, she doesn’t want to take any medicine and is very careful not to sneeze violently, all because of the baby that is growing inside of her. It is not only the expectant mother who is changed, but so is the expectant father also. Any time his wife is craving for some special food, no matter what time of a day, he will jump up and go out to get it. It is not easy to carry a new life inside of you, but we don’t see anyone complaining about the pregnancy, as it is such a precious task in spite of some inconveniences. Once we embrace Lord Jesus, we will see our faith begin to work inside of us and help us bear diverse fruits of our faith.

Please repeat after me. “The actively working faith will not stop.” There is a TV drama currently showing in Korea and its title is ‘Mister Sunshine’. Are you watching the show? Perhaps you don’t have that much time to watch it. I have been watching it and extremely touched by the evangelical contents and message. The setting of this drama is the Korean Empire in 1900 – 1905 and the story is about loyal troops fighting for self-defense of the country. One of them is a maiden from the highest class ‘Yangban’ family, Tai-Ree Kim, and she falls in love with a fellow fighter, a naval officer from U.S. who had returned to Korea, Byung-Hun Lee. One day he confessed to her his original identity as a slave in Korea before running away to U.S. and saw that she was completely shocked. He says, “You are risking your life to fight for this country of Chosun, but who is allowed to live in that country? Is a former slave allowed to live there? Are butchers allowed also?” She was shocked at the class disparity between them and felt sad that their love was doomed to fail.

Sometime later, they met again and she said this to him. “I thought I had changed a lot, but after hearing the story of your former identity, I couldn’t hide my shock and realized that I was still a member of those arrogant ‘Yangban’ class. I am sorry I hurt your feelings. I haven’t changed as much as I hoped.” Then, she cried in shame. But, he consoled her with these words. “No, you are changing a lot. It was only a bump on the road. And your heartache is the proof of your changing attitude. Therefore, you should keep going on the same road.”

Dear congregation, it is all right that we will face bumps in the road when we follow our Lord, and it doesn’t mean our steps are false. When we are changing and trying to get rid of our old customs, we will bump into things on the road, but we should not stop but continue to bump along with our actively working faith, even if we go slower than we like.

In today’s passage, there were two disciples of Lord Jesus. They had talked to Him directly and known about Him a lot, but they did not have the faith to really walk with the Lord, nor the active faith to embrace the Lord and work with Him. Today, you and I are walking on our own way to Emmaus. I hope and pray that we have the faith to believe that Lord Jesus is also walking along with us and to invite Him into the center of our lives. I pray and bless in the name of the Lord that your life of faith be revitalized by your actively working faith and then provide you a fulfilling and worthwhile life! Now, let us pray.

Dedication Prayer:

Lord, give us the heart to look honestly inside of us to see if our faith is actively working in our lives. Please let us have the faith that would not just agree emotionally or intellectually only, but would work actively. Let us walk specifically with you, our living Lord, and grant us the grace to hold onto you, the Lord of life, while living our lives in this world. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
