God of the Trinity

John 14:10-17

Rev. Se Jin Bae’s Sermon at the KUMC of Metro Detroit

I want to share a joke with you. Two childhood friends were drafted into the army. During a mandatory march, one of them noticed that his friend marching next to him was scratching his steel helmet viciously. He whispered to him, “If your head is itchy, you should take your helmet off before scratching. Why are you scratching with your helmet on?” His friend replied, “Well, if your buttock is itchy while on the march, do you take off your pants before you scratch it?”

I hope this joke makes sense to you and make you smile!

Proverbs 8:17 has this message.

I love those who love, and those who seek me find me.

In this verse, ‘I’ indicates ‘the wisdom’, so the message is that whoever loves the wisdom will be loved by the wisdom and whoever seeks the wisdom will find the wisdom.

This message is about the wisdom, but the same can be applied to our worship.

We, the worshipers, should love God and seek Him during our worship so that we can find God and be loved by Him. Worshiping without concentrating our thoughts and minds on God is futile, like worshiping idols.

God makes it very clear that when we worship and seek Him earnestly, we will be granted to meet with Him.

Dear congregation, are you here with your hearts set on worshiping God? Or are you here just because of the usual habit on Sundays? God does not want us to come out to Him from your usual habit.

The chapter 1 of Isaiah has specific message against the habitual worship.

1.  The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

2.  Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: “I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.

3.  The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner’s manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.”

4.  Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on Him.

5.  Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.

6.  From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness – only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil.

7.  Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.

8.  The Daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a city under siege.

9.. Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah!

10.  Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah!

11.  “The Multitude of your sacrifices – what are they to me?” says the LORD. “I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.

12.  When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?”

My beloved congregation, unless we come here to worship the Lord with our whole hearts concentrating on Him, we may be just trampling the Lord’s courts in vain, like Isaiah’s words. I hope and pray that during this hour we will only concentrate upon worshiping God and praising our king Lord Jesus Christ only!

(Praise: My King, My God)

In the church calendar, today is celebrated as the Trinity Sunday. The Trinity is one of the most important doctrines in Christianity, and this unique doctrine is not found in any other religions in the world. As it is very difficult to explain, lately the Trinity is not being taught often in the churches in order not to confuse the believers.

But, the Trinity plays a very crucial role in our life of faith, as it is directly connected to our salvation and rebirth.

In our journey of faith, we, the sinners, confess and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and we are reborn by our faith and saved. And through justification and sanctification, we will be able to enter the kingdom of heaven. Throughout our journey, we are guided by God of the Trinity, so we need to learn more clearly about the Trinity.

In short, the Trinity means that God, being the One and Only, has three divine characters within; namely, the Holy Father, the Holy Son and the Holy Spirit.

You may be confused about this doctrine. Some people have asked me, “Pastor! How could one God have three divine characters? Does it mean that God has multiple personalities?” My answer is, “No, God has three characters, but each character is God, equally.” This is not easy for us to explain, nor easy for us to understand, as the Trinity is our God’s unique attribute.

Theology is the study of the nature of God and religious truth. Having limitations, we the humans cannot really do an excellent job of studying the limitless God, but we can still try.

In theology, there is one specialized study called ‘organizational theology’, in which the attributes of God are divided into His unique traits and His common traits. One of God’s unique traits is His omnipresence, so He can be anywhere anytime, unlike us who are limited by time and space.

God is everywhere; He is here, but He is also in Korea, in Europe, and in Africa. God is present everywhere in the universe that He has created. Do you believe His omnipresence?

It is very difficult for us to understand the attributes of God with our limited reasoning and logical thinking. Therefore, the Trinity is not easy for us to explain, but let us try. First, let us go to the chapter 1, verse 1 of Genesis.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Dear congregation, do you understand this verse logically and rationally? Well, I don’t think you do. The difference between a believer and non-believer is found right here, at Genesis 1:1, and chapter 1 of Genesis is filled with humanly incomprehensible information and events.

As we go through our life of faith in the church, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, we begin to believe that the Bible is the written account of the infallible words of God and accept the Bible fully from Genesis 1:1 on.

After accepting the contents of the Bible from Genesis 1:1 on, we reach the dead-end when we come to the virgin birth of Jesus in chapter 1 of Matthew, which is reiterated in the Apostles’ Creed. Let us recite the first part of the Apostles’ Creed together.

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ,

His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

Born of the Virgin Mary.

Dear congregation, isn’t it really hard to believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and was born of Virgin Mary? I know it is really difficult for us to believe scientifically that a virgin could give birth to a baby, and we cannot accept the birth of Jesus rationally.

(A testimony: by Rev. Yong Ki Cho at Sudaemoon Church)

Likewise, the Trinity is really difficult for us to accept scientifically or rationally. But once we accept the Trinity without analyzing too much, we will be provided with abundant blessings in our sanctified and fruitful lives by God of the Trinity.

In today’s passage, Lord Jesus has promised two things to His disciples. Let us read John 14:13-14 together.

13.  “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.

14.  You may ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.”

Lord Jesus is saying very clearly that He will do whatever we ask for in His name.

But who is the one to make it happen? It is the Father God, who makes things happen; such as dividing the water in the Red Sea, feeding the Israelites for 40 years with manna in the desert and providing them with clothes, sandals and other necessities for the whole time in the desert. And, even raising Lazarus from the dead was done by the Father God, who poured out His spirit upon the Son God, who performed the miraculous signs.

The Father God and the Son God are one, and they work together. The Father God is too holy to go near the sinners and work with them who cannot even appear before Him. Therefore, the Father God does not hear the prayers of the sinners.

We are all sinners, so we cannot go before the Father God nor pray to Him with our requests. But today’s passage in the Bible tells us that we can ask Lord Jesus, the Son God, who is equal to the Father God, and He will intercede on our behalf, because He loves us.

Lord Jesus is our Intercessor and also our Counselor. A counselor defends the accused at the court and helps to alleviate the punishment. As sinners, when we don’t have any means of defending ourselves, our Lord Jesus, the Son God, will defend us as our Counselor, because He loves us.

Romans 8:31-39 explains the whole situation clearly.

31.  What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

32.  He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all – how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?

33.  Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.

34.  Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

35.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

36.  As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37.  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

38.  For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,

39.  neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Let us repeat one more time to understand better.

33.  Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.

34.  Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

As we are defended by our Counselor Lord Jesus Christ who is the Son God, no one will be able to separate us from the love of God. That is the reason why our Lord promised that He would do anything for us, if we ask Him in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son God.

There is one problem; Lord Jesus, the Son God, cannot be with everyone on earth at the same time. So, we are provided the third divine character of God, the Holy Spirit.

Lord Jesus, the Son God, said the following in John 16:7-8.

7.  “But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

8.  When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:”

Lord Jesus says that His going away is for our own good. If He goes away, He will send us the Counselor, the Holy Spirit God who will be with us forever.

As the Holy Spirit is with us, when we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, double the power will be bestowed abundantly upon us, by the Son God and the Holy Spirit God who are both equal in power as the Father God. Let us read John 14:16-17 of today’s passage to understand this better.

16.  “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever -

17.  the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.

The Spirit of truth, which is the Holy Spirit God, lives with us and will be in us. The power of the Holy Spirit God is poured out upon us through the request of Jesus Christ. That is why Lord Jesus is telling us His important message in John 14:12.

“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”

The reason why we can do what our Lord has been doing is because we believe in God of the Trinity, who is the union of three divine characters in one Godhead. Thanks to the grace and power of God of the Trinity, we are justified and sanctified.

Now, let us praise and worship our God of the Trinity today. He has left one last task for our eternal salvation, and that is the second coming of Lord Jesus, the Son God, and accomplishing the kingdom of God on earth.

With our faithful eyes, we should watch out for the coming of Jesus Christ and look forward to walking with Him. Now, let us all stand up and sing the closing hymn, while anticipating the return of Jesus Christ.

[Praise: Maranatha, O Lord come back to us soon]
