The Source of Miracles

John 6:3-14

Rev. Kyung Lim Shin’s sermon at the KUMC of Metro Detroit

I am suffering a lot from guilty conscience while preparing today’s sermon, as I have not done much for my mother, after all that she had done for me. I was her only child and she lived alone for 25 years in Korea after my father had passed away. Every time I was in Korea on official trip and called her, she would say, “You don’t need to come and see me. You are doing God’s work, so you should not waste your time for personal use. I will come to you and spend the night with you.” In the village she lived, the villagers would comment, “Grandmother, how can you be so happy all the time? You live all alone without any family member, but you are always happy.” She would reply, “Yes, I am really happy, because my daughter is doing important God’s work.”

I am sad about not getting together with my own children today, this Mother’s Day, but this is certainly not the first time I cannot be with them on special occasions, so they may have gotten used to the absent mother. Nowadays, my daughter has been taking good care of me, as she knows that I am having more difficulty with time management than usual these days. Late last Wednesday evening, my daughter, who works full time and the mother of two children, showed up at my home carrying containers of steamed sweet corns on the cob and ready-to-eat slices of watermelon. She asked me when she could have Mother’s Day dinner with me, and we are planning to have it during the week, as I am here every weekend.

Now, what does God want me, who is not a good mother, nor a good daughter, to talk to you on this Mother’s Day? What is expected from my sermon for today?

Let us read today’s passage together. You are familiar with this miracle of ‘5 loaves of barley bread and 2 fish’ performed by Lord Jesus with the help of some supporting cast. Who played the supporting roles? We know about the roles of Lord Jesus, a boy, the disciples, and a great crowd of people, but there is one person whose role is not mentioned. To prepare a lunch for the boy, that person must have baked the bread and cooked the fish. These days his lunch could have been prepared by his father, or picked up from McDonald’s on his way there, but over 2,000 years ago in Galilee, we are quite certain that his lunch was prepared by his mother. It doesn’t matter who prepared his lunch, but by preparing 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, that person was the important source of Jesus’ miracle of feeding five thousand men, but didn’t get any recognition or thanks, just like all the mothers in the world.

Without our mothers, we wouldn’t be sitting here in this sanctuary, but most of the times, we forget the important role of our mothers in the midst of our busy lives. It is sad for us to realize that only on Mother’s Day, mothers get the recognition they deserve.

The role of a mother can be compared to the role of roots of a tree. We don’t have to be told how important the roots are for the tree, but because they are hidden, nobody will praise the roots when they see majestic trees or beautiful flowers. People are only impressed with the results of the work of the roots. Likewise, whenever the miracle of ‘5 loaves of bread and 2 fish’ is mentioned, nobody ever talks about the person who had prepared the loaves and fish for the boy’s lunch.

Even though their tireless efforts and utmost devotion are not mentioned or recognized, they were not in vain. Even without any recognition, their efforts have helped make the good and necessary changes, like the roots hidden in the soil and the person who had prepared the loaves and fish and brought on the miracle of ‘5 loaves of bread and 2 fish’ by Lord Jesus. Likewise, the devoted efforts of all the mothers in the world are never in vain, even if they are not recognized by their children or by the society.

Some time ago, there was an article in the newspaper about two old people committing suicides on the Parents’ Day, which is on May 8th in Korea, and both had the carnation corsages pinned on their jackets. One committed suicide by drinking poison and then hanging and the other did it by drowning. I didn’t know the details, but it was really sad that they killed themselves on Parents’ Day, while wearing the carnation corsages, and it made us to reflect upon the filial duties of children to their parents.

What is the best way for us to be devoted to our parents? Remembering what our parents have done for us and making them happy are some of the things we can do as our filial duty. But pinning a corsage on their jacket, treating them to delicious meals, giving them massages, making them laugh with our jokes, are these all we can do for our parents? What can we learn from the miracle of ‘5 loaves of bread and 2 fish’ in today’s passage?

On the day of this miracle, many mothers in Israel must have packed lunches for their family members, and many among the great number of people following Jesus could have brought their lunches, but they didn’t contribute to the miracle. Only the boy with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish did. He could have eaten his lunch all by himself without offering anything, but he used his lunch to help feed so many thousands of people. What he did was possibly the best way of pleasing the person who had prepared his lunch. By using all that we have received from our mothers for a worthy cause, we can make our mothers proud and happy. Wouldn’t it be the best filial duty for us to use all the good things we have received, such as faith, characters, wisdom, good habits, talents, cooking skill, education and wealth, for worthy causes and purpose? We may not be able to give massages to our mothers or treat them to delicious food after they have passed away, but we can continue to live according to their advices, to be the person they wanted us to become, to inherit their faith and to transfer that faith to our next generations.

Let us reflect upon what our mothers wished us to do and to be. Before her death, one exhorter I know had emphasized to her adult children to help the poor as much as they could and to give at least $20 a month, if they couldn’t afford to give more. When I visit the homes of newcomers to the church, quite often I hear, “My mother used to urge me to go to church and have a good life of faith. At last, I have come to my senses and joined the church.” This is the filial duty of honoring your parents’ wishes and making your parents proud by living merciful and godly life, and this is better than 1,000 carnations for them.

Of course, living such life is not easy for us to accomplish, as there are always some unexpected obstacles. I have tried to be a better daughter to my mother and I have tried to be a better mother to my children. Now, let us pay attention to the helpful advice from God. In today’s miracle, there is the most important person, and that is Lord Jesus who used the boy’s lunch for His miraculous signs! Without the help from Jesus, anything we try to do is very difficult and we may fall down easily. After many falls, we begin to despair and soon we may give up completely. With today’s passage, Lord Jesus is telling us, “Don’t try to do it all by yourself. Remember, I am with you! Together, we made this miracle of feeding over 5 thousand men happen! Together we can do a better job of becoming a dutiful child to your parents and a great parent to your children! I will hold onto you, let us work together.”

Now, let us stop regretting what we have not done right. Let us stop feeling sorry and stop mulling over our past wrongdoings. Let us get up and go forward, taking the offered hand of Jesus and start over. Let us start saying to our mothers “I love you”, wherever they are.

If your own mother is deceased, then start saying to other mothers. The mothers in Korea have suffered hardships in the male-dominated society. In the olden days, women in childhood served their fathers, then in adulthood served their husbands, and then in their old age served their sons. They worked extremely hard to provide necessities and good education for their children, so that we could have the best opportunities. They did their utmost, never expecting any recognition from anybody and never showing how hurt they were by their children’s foolish remarks.

Let us remember our mothers’ dedication, devotion and advices for us. Let us reflect upon their wishes for us and examine our lives to see if we are fulfilling their wishes. To prove our mothers’ efforts and sufferings were not in vain and to help them feel proud of us, let us live our lives as the faithful children of God and make their dreams for us come true.
