“Which is the Most Important of All the Commandments?”

Mark 12:28-31

Rev. Boo-Soo Choi’s Sermon at KUMC of Metro Detroit

(Rev. Choi is the President of a Non-Profit Mission Organization called ‘One Body’)

I. Introduction

Among the Nobel-Prize winners, 22-30% of them are Jewish descendants.

Among Ivy League students, 23% are Jewish, and 40% of the billionaires in the world are of Jewish extraction.

The Jewish people are prominent leaders of today’s political, economical, social and cultural world. What do you think is the reason for this phenomenon?

I think there are 2 reasons.

1) First, they fear Jehovah God, and practice what God has commanded them. That is why they are above all the other people on earth.

The Jews believe the verse from Deuteronomy 28:6, “You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.” And most of all they believe this verse of Deuteronomy 28:1; “If you truly obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.”

2) Second, they put the utmost emphasis on educating their children.

The unique practice among the Jewish household is having discussions with the children constantly and asking them questions.

They are practicing what Deuteronomy 6:4-9, especially the verse 7 tells them; “Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” This practice is called “Shema” by the Jewish people.

Lately I have learned a lot from a book called “Leadership by asking questions”. This book says that asking questions is the beginning of a revolution. Having no question in any organization means there is no future for it and that soon it will perish. The leadership in the 21stcentury should be based on questions to your superiors and your subordinates.

Asking the right questions can solve the problem by bringing out the right answers.

Questions enable us to think more and delve more into the problems and also become more humble.

Why do you have to ask questions? I think asking questions will maximize the God-given potential we all have within ourselves.

II. Lessons from Today’s Passage

In today’s passage a scribe asked Jesus a question. The scribe was a teacher of the law, so he must have had a good education and was a respected member of society. Now he is asking a question about the commandments to Jesus who is in his 30s. What is the most important commandment?

Jesus answered by quoting the Shema, Deuteronomy 6:4,and 6:5; Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

Jesus added that the second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these. (Mark 12:31)

Jesus has shown the principles and practical ways to make the most of our lives.

The most important commandment is ‘love your God’; the second is ‘love your neighbors’ who are poor and helpless, and then serve them.

III. Practicing these principles and accomplishing the vision

1)  How to love God = Reading the Bible continuously

When you are reading the Bible, you get to know more about God and begin to love Him more. The early Christians, Reformists, Puritans, our ancestors during the Japanese occupation and during the Korean War, they all had read the Bible with passion. They would read the Bible, meditate on it and memorize the words so that they could live righteous lives.

But today, 70% of Christians do not read even 1 page of Bible during any given week. And 35% of them do not read the Bible at all. In other words, these sheep are not feeding on any good grass.

To remedy this situation, we want to show you a 2 minute long video that was produced by us about the urgent need for reading the Bible more. (Show the video)

Most people are intimidated by the whole Bible. So, we encourage them to read the booklet “OYB and the Bible Time” produced by our organization. This booklet is sent to 100,000 people in Korea, and 50,000 in other countries, so monthly readership is 150,000 Christians.

We supply Bibles to missionaries all other world, but not free. We charge $1 for 1 Bible booklet, so that the booklets will be treated better by the recipients.

We are not in this business for profit. $1 per book received is used in printing more Bibles. Our plan is to supply the Bible booklets for 1 year. This will enable the person to read the whole Bible within that time period.

For the orphans, we supply the Bible booklets free of charge. Our first priority is to help the orphans.

2) How to love neighbors = Helping orphans and widows

James 1:27  Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

The love of God can become ideological or conceptual, so Jesus asked us also to love our neighbors. In the book of James, looking after the orphans and widows is pure and faultless.

Isaiah 1:17  Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.

‘One Body’ doesn’t give free bread to orphans. We give the words of God. We are well aware that UN and other International NGOs give free bread to orphans, and they do pretty decent jobs.

Orphans are asked to leave their orphanages when they reach 18 years of age. Then where do they go? After orphanage, 60% of girls go into prostitution and 70% of boys go into the organized crime.

The reason for this is that only less than 20% of orphans can manage to get jobs to support themselves when leaving the orphanage. We want to equip them with the knowledge of words of God.

Joseph was sold into slavery when 17 years old and sent to Egypt, but he managed to live a righteous life as he had learned the words of God from early on.

We produced a 2 minute video about the orphans and the orphanages, and it will show you why we need to supply them with God’s words. (Video of orphans shown)

IV. Conclusion

What is the most important thing in your life? What are the most valuable and precious?

Jesus summarized the whole Bible very simply;

Love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Then with the same heart, soul and mind, love your neighbors.

I want you to read the Bible yourself daily. Then please support us to provide the Bibles to the orphans.

By giving up a pizza a month, you can support to supply 10 orphans with the Bibles.

By giving up a cup of coffee a week, you can support to supply 5 orphans with the Bibles.

I want to urge you to practice what God commands you to do; Love your God and Love your neighbors. I hope and pray that you receive the blessing to practice these most important commandments in your life.
