“The Kingdom of Heaven and the Hidden Treasure”

Matthew 13:44

Rev. Chan Young Jang’s Sermon at KUMC of Metro Detroit

1.

Thanks to your prayers, I have come back home safely from the Mongolian mission.  Every time I went on a mission trip, I had received so much of God’s Grace, so I was looking forward to receiving it and wondering what kind of Grace it would be this time. It may look like you go on a mission trip to give, but in reality you are the one receiving, and that is the ‘mystery’. From outside it appears that you are giving your time and your money and risking your health to go on a mission, but in the end you always receive a lot more than you give, and sure enough, this time also I received a lot, and so did the other members of the team.

The first thing you learn on a mission is to have ‘the obedience’, as the circumstances are ‘out of your control’ from the first moment on. Because you are afraid, you would have wanted to control everything in the mission field, but you just let God to lead you and guide you.

Known widely as ‘the father of modern management’, Peter Drucker stated that the ‘micro control’(micro management) is the lowest kind of leadership, as the person has to control every small detail of the management. Sooner or later this micro controlling person is not available to take care of things, and then it will be a disaster.

On a mission field, your experiences and common senses don’t count that much, and you cannot predict the circumstances there, so you have to let things happen and let Jesus take care of things. That is why you will very likely meet Jesus on a mission field, as you are open-minded there. This is the ‘hidden treasure’ of a mission trip.

Today we are going to meditate on the parable of the ‘kingdom of heaven’ and the ‘hidden treasure’, after the parables of ‘the mustard seed’ and ‘the yeast’. This parable tells us that the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy, went and sold all he had and bought that field.

To fully understand this parable, we have to bear in mind the custom of 2,000 years ago. Unlike today, people at that time hid their treasures in a big jar and buried it underground, as there were no banks, and nobody owned safes. In Matthew Chapter 25, we read about the person who had received one talent. He went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. It was deemed to be the safest way. But problems arise when the person who hid the treasure dies unexpectedly, and the treasure no longer has an owner.

For instance, a rich man buried his enormous treasures when a war broke out. Soon either he was killed, or became a prisoner in a faraway land never to return. In this case, the treasures stay hidden under the ground for a long time, maybe hundreds of years. Then one day someone finds the treasures. In today’s passage, very likely this was a tenant farmer who gave a share of the crop to the landowner as rent. And he discovered the treasures while plowing the field. He quickly buried them again and then sold all he had, and bought that field to get that treasure.

The important point here is the fact that the farmer found the treasure ‘by chance’. The kingdom of heaven is found unexpectedly. Someone goes to school, and then finds out that it is a mission school, so he learns the Bible by chance. While in military service, someone goes to church within the compound just to kill some time on a Sunday, and then meets Jesus there. All his life, his family faithfully performed the ancestral rites of Confucianism, and this man goes to church because of his new girl friend, and then meets Jesus. Or someone gets a job at a company, and then because of his new boss, he meets Jesus. Or someone goes to a retreat center to get some rest, and then meets Jesus there. All these instances are the results of Grace working in their lives. I want to wish you this blessing of unexpected Grace in your life!

2.

Now, what is the core point of this parable of the ‘hidden treasure’?

1) First, the kingdom of heaven is ‘hidden’ like this treasure.

Matthew 13:44  “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field”. The kingdom of heaven is like hidden treasure, so not everyone can see it. There aren’t many people that discover it or take possession of it. Here in today’s passage, the owner of the land didn’t know about the treasure, so when the tenant farmer wanted to buy the land, he sold it without any hesitation. Likewise, a lot of people do not appreciate the value of the hidden treasure in their fields.

Nowadays, many people happily go on Alaskan cruise, but not that long ago, Russians thought Alaska was useless, icy land, so sold it to U.S. for $7,600,000 in 1867. But within 13 years, huge natural gas and gasoline deposits were found in Alaska, and the land continues to serve as very valuable strategic military fortress to guard U.S. against possible Russian or Japanese aggressions. But at the time of purchase of Alaska, some at the State Council meeting thought it was the most disgraceful and foolish decision. This kind of thing happens when you don’t appreciate the real value.

In today’s Bible passage, Jesus tells us that the value of the kingdom of heaven is not known to everyone, especially not to the Pharisees and Scribes. In Matthew 13:11, Jesus replied that “the knowledge of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.”

The disciples of Jesus were allowed to have the knowledge of the kingdom of heaven. The hidden treasure means ‘Jesus Christ’ and also ‘the kingdom of heaven’. Jesus began his ministry on earth by proclaiming “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” (Matthew 4:17) In another words, if you repent and accept Jesus, then you will have the kingdom of heaven. But a lot of people didn’t accept Jesus, so they were never given the knowledge of the kingdom of heaven, even though they were given the bread, and were healed of their diseases by Jesus. ‘The secret of redemption by Jesus’ is found in the Bible. The Bible is God’s words and tells us, the Christians, about our redemption by Jesus consistently, from the beginning till the end. The Gospel gives us the knowledge of the kingdom of heaven.

There are many pseudo-Gospels in the world. When I stopped at a bookstore in Seoul after the Mongolian mission, I noticed 2 books: One was about ‘Monk Bup-Ryun’ and the other was about ‘Pope Francis’ who visited Korea recently. These 2 books give the readers many good pointers about our journey on this earth, and they may talk about the heaven, but this heaven doesn’t have the master, Lord Jesus, in the kingdom, and we have to watch out for this kind of heaven. This is not the kingdom of heaven the Bible and Lord Jesus talk about.

The kingdom of heaven is not just a benevolent, restful place for us. Jesus described it as a ‘treasure’, the most precious thing. What is the most precious to you? Is Lord Jesus the most precious to you? Where is he, is he inside of you? Then how precious you have become, because of the treasure inside of you!

When I arrived in Korea, the first place I stopped was the bath-house. There was a notice posted on the wall of the bath-house. “Your valuables should be brought to the counter for safekeeping. We are not responsible for lost items.” I was wondering what the most valuable thing was, and then an idea came to me. I am the most valuable, because the most precious Jesus is inside of me. Once you accept Jesus and know the kingdom of heaven, you will find out how precious you are. Jesus was saying to his disciples by this parable, “You are the hidden treasures, as I am inside of you.”

2) Second, those who found the kingdom of heaven are in ‘joy’.

Matthew 13:44  “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went.” How happy this person must have been, after finding and then quietly hiding the treasure! Can you imagine the joy he must have felt? This is the secret of faithful life. Once you accept Jesus into your heart, you will feel this joy. You have discovered the kingdom of heaven in Jesus, and found the hidden treasure, Jesus.

Lately, for our Daily Bible, we are reading the book of ‘1 John’ written by Apostle John. He also wrote the last book in the Bible, Revelation. When was the Revelation written? It was written near the end of his life while exiled on Patmos Island, and he was led by the Holy Spirit and received the visions of the Lord, now recorded in the Book of Revelation. When he was describing the heaven, he had to rely on the jewels available at that time.

Revelation 21:18-21  The wall was made of jasper, and the city was pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass.

We have never heard of some of these jewels, but the heaven was full of these precious stones. There were 12 gates, each gate made of a pearl. How could we not feel tremendous joy when we find the heaven? The heaven is a place for peace and joy.

Romans 14:17  The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

John 16:22  Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

This is the mystery of the kingdom of heaven. The early Christians appreciated this joy. So, under any circumstances, even when being martyred by beheading, they rejoiced. Once you have Jesus and the kingdom of heaven in you, you will never lose the joy.

On the other hand, the Satan will try to take away the joy of the Christians in every possible way, and replace it with things in this world. A.W. Tozer called those being manipulated by the worldly things ‘the Circumferential Christians’, as they cannot decide on anything, but just walk around the boundary line.

In today’s Bible passage, this farmer was so happy that he went and sold all he had. He didn’t hesitate at all. Just like him, when we have the joy of the kingdom of heaven, we don’t cling to worldly things and will not fight over them. We can easily concede things to others without regrets, because we have Jesus. Now that we have the kingdom of heaven, nothing matters any more, and we live our lives with joy.

3) Third, we will sacrifice anything for the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 13:44  “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”

Those who found the hidden treasure will never give it up. This man hid it under the ground, and then with trembling heart, he went home. We can assume that early next morning he went to the realtor to make arrangement for purchasing the field.

He had to buy the field to get hold of the hidden treasure. Why did he need to buy the field? It was because the treasure of Jesus is hidden in that field. That field with the hidden treasure is our church. Some people say, “I like Jesus, but not the church”, and they are only half right, we have to buy the field as well. Some say, “I want to have Jesus, but not that person”, and they are again half right. We have to get that person as well, if Jesus is in him. Some say, “I want to live with Jesus only, I don’t want to live in this world”, and they are wrong. We have to find the hidden treasures in this world, as they are not found only at holy, secluded retreat centers.

Finally, this man got the landowner’s promise to sell the field. He agreed to pay any price the owner wanted. Now he began to sell all his possessions. We can guess he sold his wedding ring and any kinds of jewelry. His family and neighbors must have thought he was going crazy to pay that exorbitant price for that meager land. He didn’t pay any attention to them and bought the land.

He couldn’t concede, and wouldn’t give up that treasure. “When he found it, he hid it again.” The real treasure is only to be gotten by giving up all his possessions. We cannot purchase the kingdom of heaven by negotiating a certain price, as it demands the absolute price of all of our possessions, and it is absolutely worth it.

The core point of this parable is that no matter what sacrifice we make for the kingdom of heaven, it is worth a lot more than that. Once the hidden treasure is found, you have to make it yours by selling all you have and buying the field to get the treasure.

When a man loves a woman, he has to give up all the rest of women on earth, and that is real love. Once you find a real pearl, you wouldn’t care that much for pebbles. Once the sun comes up, you wouldn’t want to light a candle. Have you found the hidden treasure, the kingdom of heaven yet? Have you met Jesus and called his name with tears of joy?

3.

During the Mongolian mission, I had the opportunity to meet with Rev. Yoil Kim, the dean of Mongolian Methodist Seminary. After retiring 10 years ago, he came to Mongolia as a missionary, and now he is 72 years old. The reason he came to Mongolia was because his 29 year old son had died there by electrocution while fixing the roof during short term mission trip. He is buried in Ulan Bator, the capital city. At first, it must have been extremely painful for Rev. Kim, but soon he found the hidden treasure, his new ministry for the young people of Mongolia. So, just like the farmer in this parable, he sold everything he owned and was able to buy the precious field in Mongolia. When asked if he was holding any grudge against Mongolia for his son’s death, he replied, “No, this land has given me the kingdom of heaven that I had been seeking all my life. Now I hope to die here.”

Let us sing this hymn, “I’d Rather Have Jesus”.

Please discuss the following topics at your cell group meetings.

1. Jesus described the kingdom of heaven as ‘hidden treasure’. What do you think about the fact that this hidden treasure is not being discovered by many people?

2. Can you understand this man’s action of ‘selling all he had to buy the treasure’? Have you ever done similar thing in your life? Please share your experience.
