‘When the day of the Pentecost came’

Acts 2:1-4

Rev. Chan Young Jang’s Sermon at KUMC of Metro Detroit

1.

From today on, it is the ‘Pentecostal Season’ in our church calendar. Today is the first day of this season and today is the ‘Pentecost Sunday’. The word ‘Pentecost’ derives from the Greek word for “the 50thday”, as it falls on the 50th day after the Feast of the Passover.

On Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the Holy Spirit coming down to us after resurrected Jesus Christ was taken up to the heaven. On that day the Holy Spirit came to rest on all of them gathered at Mark’s Upper Room and founded the first ‘Church’ on earth. This Pentecostal Season lasts for 6 months until the Advent Season in December, so we are going to study and meditate on the subject of ‘The Holy Spirit and the Church’ for the next 4 weeks.

The Holy Spirit came down and changed the whole world. Through His churches, God’s redeeming work began, and God’s gospel was spread first in Jerusalem church, then onto Antioch churches, and 7 churches in Asia Minor and to Spain, and to churches in Rome, and to all over the Europe and the world.

The Holy Spirit filled those in the Jerusalem church and challenged the Jewish Christians to go out of Jerusalem and reach out to the ‘Gentiles’ and fulfill the commandment of Jesus Christ.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”(Acts 1:8)

There is a book with the title of “Why Nations Fail?” published 2 years ago, which was written by MIT economics professor Daron Acemoglu and Harvard political science professor James Robinson, and in it they are asking why some countries remain poor, while some others are rich and influential in the history of human race.

Their conclusion is different from any previous theories of the climate, geographical location, culture and race playing pivotal roles in building the country’s wealth. The answer is that the country has to be ‘inclusive’ in its politics, economy, and culture to prosper. When it is inclusive and effective, the country’s prosperity will take roots and soon it will lead and influence other countries in the world.

On the other hand, those countries not inclusive cannot get out of the poverty and will soon fade away from the world history.

But this word ‘inclusive’ is pivotal also in our churches, homes and to us. Any church, home, or an individual that is confined to its own will not grow and soon fail. Then what enables us to see the people outside and reach out to them? It is the Holy Spirit that does that.

We have known how the disciples were changed after the Holy Spirit came into them. We have seen that after accepting the gospel, the people and their churches change their communities and eventually their country. When the gospel was being spread in Europe in the early days of Christianity, it was a desolate place filled with poverty, famine, plunders, superstition, and frequent epidemics. The barbarians in Europe were changed by the gospel, and we know the rest of the history.

2.

This is how the disciples and later the whole world got changed forever.

Acts 2:1  “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

You remember that Jesus had the Passover supper with his disciples before dying on the cross as the ‘Passover lamb’. After his resurrection, Jesus stayed on earth for 40 days. A few days after his ascent into the heaven, this Pentecost day came.

‘When the day of Pentecost came,’ it was right time for God’s work, and His time is always correct time.

Rev. Hyo-Sub Choi, the Pastor Emeritus of Acola Church, wrote books with the titles of “The late comer Jesus” and “3 miles per hour Jesus”. Can you guess what he is writing about? He wants to emphasize God’s time is not the same as our time, so we shouldn’t be impatient. We should wait for God’s time with our utmost faith, before starting His ministry.

Here today the disciples remember Jesus’ command to them.

Acts 1:4  On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.”

Now the Holy Spirit, ‘the promise from God’, came down to them. During the Pentecostal Season, remembering the first day the Holy Spirit came down to earth, the churches and us Christians hope to get restored to our original faith and purpose. We want to examine in 2 ways what we have to restore today, by studying God’s words in the Bible.

1) First, we want to meditate on the spiritual meaning of ‘the day of Pentecost’. For the Jewish people this Pentecost is directly connected to the Passover Day in their Exodus from Egypt. 50 days after the Passover, Moses received the Ten Commandments from God on Mt. Sinai, so the Pentecost Day commemorates that event also.

Just as the Israelites had received the commandments carved in stones, those in Mark’s Upper Room received God’s words carved in their hearts. How could it be possible? It is because the Bible was inspired by God with the help of the Holy Spirit. As our churches and us Christians have been filled with the Holy Spirit, some say this is the era of Holy Spirit.

2) Second, we want to meditate on the seasonal meaning of ‘the day of Pentecost’. The seasons are very important for the farmers, and the Israelites offered their first fruits to God on the Pentecost Day. Traditionally the Passover is the last day of barley farming and after 50 days, the Pentecost is the first day of wheat harvesting. This day is called the Feast of Weeks (7 weeks) or Feast of Harvest, and it is also called the Day of First Fruits, and on that day the Holy Spirit came to us.

The fact that the Holy Spirit came on the day of First Fruits means it was the right time. The farmers wait for the right time every season, and we have to wait for the Holy Spirit to lead us. The Holy Spirit will be with us when the time is right after we pray and obey God’s command.

God only fills those who trust and love and wait for Him with the Holy Spirit. True love always requires the waiting. For those who lack conviction, the waiting period is full of pain and complaints, but for those who have conviction, it is the period of growing more in love and hope.

The Holy Spirit came to rest on those who longed and waited for it. It was unusual for the Jewish people to thirst for the Holy Spirit, as they had believed themselves to be the ‘Chosen People’ from birth. Now in this age of the Holy Spirit, it is the gift for only those who seek, look for, and long for it. The power you receive when the Holy Spirit comes on you is ‘dunamis’ in Greek and the word ‘dynamite’ is derived from this word.

Now we are given the opportunity to live the life of a redeemed Christian. Do you want to take it? Are you content just to be the redeemed Christian or Church, or are you willing to live the powerful life of redeemed Christian or Church?

When one does not long for the Holy Spirit, there is no reason for God to fill the person with the Holy Spirit and make him His child.

Think about it. Who gets the gifts? Only those who long for them and patiently wait for them will receive the gifts. No parent will give any gift to the child when he or she does not long for and look forward to it, and receives it with blase attitude. When you ask old bachelors whom they want to date, they invariably answer that they prefer to date the younger women. You are outraged at them until you hear their reasoning. According to them, the younger women usually respond with more enthusiasm at whatever activities they plan, compared to the older and wiser women.

3.

Now what will happen to those when the Holy Spirit comes to them? We can tell who is filled with the Holy Spirit or not by taking one glance into the person’s life. Is there an order in the person’s life? Without the presence of the Holy Spirit, the person is on his own, living as the king, and his life is a chaos.

1) The first thing that happens with the presence of the Holy Spirit in one’s life is an orderly ‘recovery of time’. Previously you may have skipped attending the church on Sundays and gone on vacations or meeting with old friends, but now you have an order in your life. Sunday is the first day of the week, so you offer it as the First Fruits. Every Sunday is your day of Pentecost to meet with the Lord. When you are in love you long for the next meeting, and just like that you long for Sunday service and the early morning service. Soon your relationships with family and friends will be restored.

When Jerusalem was soon to be destroyed, Prophet Jeremiah delivered this message to the people of Judah.

Jeremiah 17:22b  “Keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your forefathers.”

Apostle John, exiled in the Patmos Island, wrote in the Revelation 1:10; “On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit”. The Lord’s Day is not my own day.

Apostle Paul was the one who knew the meaning of Lord’s Day very clearly.

Ephesians 5:16  “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

In other words, we should make the most of the every opportunity God has given. With the help of the Holy Spirit we can redeem the time in our church and in our homes.

2) The second thing that happens is the dedication of our resources. Previously your offering to church may have been painful, and you were easily offended by the talk of tithing. With the presence of the Holy Spirit in you, you are happy to offer to God the first fruits of your labor. The best expression and the first step of your dedication is ‘the tithing’.

Money binds people to be its slaves, and belittles them, and breaks their relationships. The Bible does not regard the money itself to be evil, but teaches the right principle of managing money. But once one is attached to money, he or she will soon fall into greed and deception. When Daniel refused the king’s wine and fine food on principle, he was just a young man in his teens, but had realized the power of contamination.

With the influence of the Holy Spirit, you want God to manage your resources. I don’t know too much about running a business, but it is obvious to me that the attachment to small profits will not make the business grow, and in the long run, only those who adhere to the right principle will succeed.

I served as a chaplain for the 1st battalion in the Korean Army. My duty was to visit each unit of the corps and to pray for the soldiers. I was most impressed with the air transportation unit whose members parachute from 10,000 feet above ground. For their training, they have to leap from the platform raised 11 feet above ground. Supposedly this 11 feet height is the most frightening for humans, and once one conquers the fear of height, he can jump from any height, including 10,000 feet above. This leap of faith from 11 feet above is just like our leap of tithing. The tithing is a basic test of who the master is in your life. Is it your money or is it you who runs your life?

Do not worry. Do not fear the shortage of resources. God will fill your needs to the brim. We all have to take this leap by tithing.

Malachi 3:10  “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

The relationship of the Holy Spirit and our resources is very closely related. If you do not allow God to manage your resources, you will not experience His blessings, and but just live within your own means by your own labor and worries. This is not the best way of life for a child of God.

4.

Once we are filled with the Holy Spirit, it will revolutionize all aspects of our lives as well as the matter of tithing. Think of those disciples, gathered in Mark’s Upper Room, who were first filled with the Holy Spirit, and how much they accomplished afterwards.

We should eagerly long to be filled with the Holy Spirit within us. Then we can restore the order that God provides for us and enjoy the happiness in our lives. On this Pentecost Sunday, I want to wish every one of you God’s blessings for new challenges and new decisions in your life.

Let us sing this hymn together; “Please hold on to me, my Holy Spirit”
