It’s been a long time since I last spent Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) in Korea. Actually, I think it is the first time since I came to the US in 1984. How wonderful it would have been if I had come and spent Chuseok with my mother  before she passed away. I just thought that it wasn’t an option for me then... And because I thought that, I never got to. I did not want to burden those who would be concerned about my lonely orphan status in Korea so I told a white lie and spent the day all by myself. I think it was probably the first time I had a whole day to myself without meeting anyone.

As I move to another hotel and get ready to pick up Wesley 's board members who will be arriving in Korea today, I have been reminiscing on funny happenings I have experienced during my visits to Korea over the past 30 years. When I first came to Korea with the Americans, there were many people who were annoyed by this strange young Korean woman.  At restaurants, some people would put a serving spoon in front of me and expect me to serve. They couldn’t accept that I get served along with the important people and eat with them. During the meeting with the bishops, the staff had me run errands. The person who picked us up at the airport could care less that I was struggling with a big bag but went on to help the American president who was twice as big as me. It still makes me laugh remembering the awkward look on his face when he saw the president himself help me with my bag. I felt like I was an unwelcome guest in my own country then but I have lived through it, the times have changed, I also have aged and now It seems that I have gotten over that stage.

When I come to Korea, I reward myself by watching a Korean movie. This time I saw "Anshi Sung". It was an inspirational movie about General Yang Man-Chun’s confrontations as a watchman of the city of Anshi during the invasion of Goguryeo by the Tang Dynasty. General Yang fights against 100,000 troops with 5,000 soldiers and using all of his wisdom and tactics, barely prevents the first attack.  But when he and his soldiers could no longer bear to fight, one of his soldiers comes and asks the general why he is fighting a losing battle. General Yang answers, “do you always fight a winning battle?” and that question struck me with a strong resonance. If general Yang had chosen to fight only the winning battles, there would not have been the historical victory and Goguryeo would have fallen.  If we want to fight only the winning battles, we still may experience defeat, but if we try to fight the losing battles, we shall experience true victory and that will make our lives worth living.
