Confirmation and Purity Class for our Youth

For 8 weeks, 11 juniors and seniors partook in an 8 class confirmation and purity class. The first 5 weeks focused on the confirmation portion of our class, where we looked at the various doctrines Christians believe in. The classes were very in-depth and covered various topics such as God the Father, creation, Jesus, humanity, Holy Spirit, the Trinity, salvation, common grace, prevenient grace, justifying grace, sanctifying grace, glorification, the church, sacraments, eschatology (end times), the 3 different millennial views, and the Gospel.

Their homework assignment was a 10 page Statement of Faith paper on these various topics based on Scripture. What I conveyed throughout the class was that whatever view they believed in that it must be supported by Scripture. As Christians, Scripture, not our experiences or desires, is our authority. There are many Christians today who have beliefs based on experience rather than Scripture, causing confusion for Christians and non-Christians as well. My hope is that the Statement of Faith paper would help the students base their beliefs in Scripture and also, know that the Word of God must be authority over their lives.

The last 3 weeks were the purity classes and we looked at 4 topics: singlehood, courtship, marriage, and sex. The reason I talked about singlehood first was that not all are called to be married. I shared with them that being single does not mean that they are delayed in their stage of life, nor is it something to be ashamed of; for the two greatest figures in Christianity, Jesus and Apostle Paul, were both single. Unfortunately, in many religions/cultures, marriage is often idolized. Christianity was the first religion/culture that said it was okay to be single. Hence, the passages about supporting widows, and Apostle Paul teaching that singlehood was a gift, pointed to the fact that our greatest source of love, joy, and satisfaction was not found in human beings, but rather, in Christ alone.

We then went to talk about courtship. I shared how dating and courtship were different; the former focused on the now (no thought of the future), and the latter focused on the future (marriage).  Biblically, when two parties had interest in each other, the mindset of “dating” was for the purpose of marriage (i.e. Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Rachel). There was no, “let’s just have fun and see what happens.” I shared with the students that as they start to think about relationships, to have a Biblical perspective on dating (both parties courting for the sake of marriage), and not the worldly perspective on dating (having fun, not being alone, intimacy with another person, etc.).

We then talked about marriage and how marriage is a covenant. The difference between contract marriage and covenant marriage is that in a contract marriage, the focus is on the self, whereas in a covenant marriage, the focus is on the other. Often times, the reason why people get divorced is that focus is always on the self rather than the other. If both focused on the other above themselves, marriage can be beautiful. I shared with them that the only way they can look at the other above themselves is to always remember the cross; that Christ thought of us and His love for us led Him to the cross. When you grasp the cross, can you start to place the other above yourself.

We finally ended with the topic of sex. I shared that sex was created by God, and in the right context, sex can be beautiful. When sex is abused and not done in God’s way, it can lead to damage and hurt (physically, emotionally, psychologically, mentally, spiritually). But when sex is done in the right way, in the context of marriage, will it be most satisfying and joyful.

Though there was a lot of information in these 8 classes, my hope was that for each class, they would hear something new or they would be reminded of something they had learned before, and they would see the beauty of our faith. But more importantly, they would see the beauty of our God; that His death and resurrection has given us the greatest gift of all, eternity with Him! I trust that God will continue to work in the lives of my 11 brothers and sisters, and I’m excited to see how God will use them to expand His Kingdom!
